Being Tamil didn't mean much of anything to me during my childhood. It didn't mean much until I visited Sri Lanka and saw what being Tamil meant there. It meant being afraid every time you walked by a soldier or police officer. It meant being viewed as a second-class citizen. It meant being attacked periodically, in state-sponsored pogroms. It meant crying in underground bunkers when the government's Air Force jets flew overhead. It meant I don't know whether the children I taught English to are now alive, injured or dead.

It meant I have a unique opportunity as a Tamil in America to act as a voice for Tamils silenced in Sri Lanka.
