After traveling to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami it was not the destruction wrought by waves but the empty houses, destroyed by shelling and riddled with bullets, that I remembered most.

The world, attention briefly turned to the island after this unspeakable tragedy, largely ignored the slow tragedy that unfolded over decades of civil war in Sri Lanka. The devastation of the Tamil civilian population has occurred in increments too small for the measure of the media: a critic of the government disappeared, a journalist killed, a school shelled, or a family displaced.

Each event, each individual tragedy, is too insignificant to merit much attention, but together they tell the story of a community forgotten by the international community. This fast is for those forgotten stories.

I hope that with this small act we will bring attention to the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka and I hope that you will join me. Together, we will move our representatives and our community to action and help restore the dignity of a people forgotten.
