Express your disappointment over Senators' new approach to Sri Lanka

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee's report revising U.S. strategy in Sri Lanka prioritizes geopolitical interests over human rights. The report, released December 7th, advocates a softer approach to U.S.–Sri Lanka relations and gravely undermines last month's State Department's report documenting war crimes perpetrated by the Sri Lankan government. Unless the U.S. continues to pressure Sri Lanka to uphold the fundamental rights of Tamils on the island, its despicable human rights record will continue.

We urge you to call Senators Kerry and Lugar and express your disappointment that they are prioritizing geopolitical interests over human rights in Sri Lanka.

Calling is simple and takes only a few minutes of your time.
1.
Call Senator Kerry at 202.224.2742 and Senator Lugar at 202.224.4814.
2.Tell them your name, and that you are calling on behalf of People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) regarding Sri Lanka.
3.Tell the aide:
-I welcome the Senators' heightened attention to Sri Lanka;
-But I am disappointed that the report advocates an approach that prioritizes U.S. geopolitical interests over Tamils' fundamental human rights;
-Only honest criticism of the Sri Lankan government will keep it accountable to human rights norms, so the United States needs to keep pressuring it until Tamils can live with peace and dignity.
4. Let us know that you called here so we can follow-up with the Senators

Your calls are the most important and effective way to ensure that human rights are upheld. Please urge your family and friends to call Senators Kerry and Lugar as well.
