Australian Tamils call off hunger strike

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Tamil protesters who staged a seven-day hunger strike outside the Australian prime minister’s home have announced the end of their protest following assurances their demands had been heard. The five men called off their fast late Friday after a mass demonstration involving up to 8,000 people outside the foreign affairs department in Canberra, a spokeswoman for the protest movement said. The remaining two men and one woman will begin the eighth day of their protest this evening, vowing to continue their fast until Canada shows a sign of diplomatic protest by temporarily bringing back its envoy from Colombo.

Pictures of the burn victims have been released by Tamil media, and I have managed to talk to one family, whose members live near the region and came to government controlled areas, who has confirmed these claims.

[The Hindu]

Tamils in the US will hold a demonstration in front of the State Department and the White House here on Friday protesting against the “genocide” against their community in Sri Lanka. ‘Tamils Against Genocide’, a pro-Tamils organisation, will organise a rally and hunger strike to urge US President Mr Barack Obama to bring an end to the “genocide” in northern Sri Lanka, where the Army and LTTE are engaged in a war.

“Tamils have been systematically attacked and brutalised since the government ordered international aid agencies out of the region last September,” the group said in a statement.
