Tamil community forms human chain

Tens of thousands of Toronto Tamils took to the streets today to protest attacks by the Sri Lankan military in that country’s bloody civil war. Waving the red and gold flags of the Tamil Tigers alongside Canadian flags, the protesters mixed chants for a separate Tamil homeland with calls for the Canadian government to take action to help stop what they call a genocide in their homeland.

Sri Lankan protesters form human chain at Toronto’s Union Station

Thousands of protesters flooded onto one of Toronto’s busiest downtown streets at rush hour on Friday in opposition to a Sri Lankan government offensive aimed at crushing the separatist Tamil Tigers. The protesters formed a human chain outside Union Station, a main transit point for commuters catching trains, subways and buses out of the downtown core. The flood of protesters and commuter traffic clogged the area as the rally began to disperse at 6 p.m.

Tamils protest ‘genocide’

Thousands of Tamils from across Greater Toronto formed a human chain stretching along Front Street and up University Avenue this afternoon to protest against what they call the genocide of the Tamil people in their homeland, Sri Lanka.About 45,000 people took part in the protest throughout the day, according to Staff Sgt. Deb Abbott of 52 Division, with about 30,000 on Front St. alone.
